Crooked Dice at Craps: Casino Controls and What to Do

Crooked or loaded dice are altered to bias outcomes. In a regulated casino, equipment controls, one-hand handling, dice retention, inspection, surveillance, and regulator-approved procedures make intentional substitution materially different from an informal game.

Sam’s experience

Across more than 65 casinos, I have not seen credible evidence that a licensed property used biased dice against players. That is an observation, not a guarantee. If something looks wrong, use the formal floor and regulator process rather than arguing from a short losing streak.

What regulated crews control

ControlPurpose
Casino-supplied precision diceStandard dimensions, markings, transparency, and balance under approved specifications
One-hand handlingReduces concealment and substitution opportunities
Dice remain over the tableKeeps equipment in crew and surveillance view
Back-wall throw requirementCreates a valid physical roll and prevents controlled sliding
Inspection after a die leavesChecks identity, damage, contamination, or substitution before reuse
Scheduled and incident-based replacementRemoves worn, damaged, or questioned dice under house procedure
Supervision and surveillanceProvides independent observation and transaction review

Exact dice specifications, serial or logo markings, replacement intervals, and inspection methods vary by jurisdiction and property. The crew may replace a die rather than perform a visible test at the table.

Loaded dice versus normal variance

A cluster of sevens, missed points, or long run of one total is not proof of altered dice. Random results naturally form streaks. Evidence of bias requires a sufficiently large, reliably recorded sample and a valid statistical test—not memory of a painful session.

Even a fair pair can roll three consecutive sevens with probability (1/6)3 = 1/216. Unusual does not mean impossible or manipulated.

What not to do

  • Do not take, mark, scratch, weigh, float-test, or pocket casino dice.
  • Do not accuse a shooter or crew member based only on recent totals.
  • Do not interrupt a throw by reaching for the dice.
  • Do not post a cheating claim publicly before documenting and reporting the facts.
  • Do not assume an unlicensed private game has casino-level controls.

If you suspect a dice problem

  1. Stop wagering if you are uncomfortable.
  2. Note the table, time, property, visible dice identifier, and specific event.
  3. Ask the boxperson or floor supervisor to inspect or replace the dice.
  4. Request the casino’s complaint process.
  5. If unresolved, contact the jurisdiction’s gaming regulator with factual documentation.

The house does not need biased dice to have an advantage. Standard payouts already create the mathematical edge. That fact is not proof of fairness, but it explains why ordinary losses are expected without a cheating theory.

Learn the legal casino throw and dice controls, then review the gambler’s fallacy before interpreting a streak.

Dice handling and inspection principles were checked against the Massachusetts Gaming Commission’s approved Craps and Mini-Craps rules. Local specifications and complaint procedures differ.
