Craps Table Limits: Minimums, Maximums and Odds

Minimum bets · Maximum bets · Odds limits · Correct increments

Craps table limits tell you the smallest and largest permitted wager, but one posted number does not necessarily apply identically to every bet. Line bets, proposition bets, bonus bets, and Odds can each have separate limits or calculation rules.

Read before buying in: table minimum, table maximum, maximum Odds, bonus-bet limits, and any sign explaining commission or grandfathering. If a limit is unclear, ask the dealer while the dice are in the center.

Where craps limits are displayed

A placard is commonly mounted on the inside rail near each base dealer. It may show a minimum and maximum such as “$10–$2,000” plus an Odds rule such as “3-4-5x Odds.” Electronic terminals place the same information in the game or help screen.

Not every payoff or special limit fits on the placard. Nevada’s rules, for example, require applicable payoff schedules to be displayed or readily accessible with notice posted at or near a craps game. Treat the layout, placard, paytable, and crew explanation as parts of the same rules package.

Six different meanings of a craps limit

A posted maximum is a headline until its scope is defined. Identify whether the rule restricts wager principal, combined action or winnings, and whether it applies to one player, one betting position, one number or the whole table.

Limit definitions; examples describe possible rules, not a particular casino
LimitWhat it governsWhat to confirm
Minimum wagerThe entry amount for a bet, bet class or total actionDoes each Place number have to meet it, or can several bets qualify together?
Maximum wager by bet classThe principal accepted on a named wagerA Pass Line cap does not establish a proposition or Odds cap.
Combined per-number limitThe amounts the house groups against one numberDoes it combine Place, Buy, a traveled Come bet and attached Odds?
Total-layout limitCombined principal across the positions covered by the ruleDoes it include Odds, standing bets, off bets and commissions? Is it per player?
Odds limitAn allowed stake multiple, lay amount or target win behind a qualifying flat betCheck the point, parent wager and any separate cash or aggregate ceiling.
Maximum payout or winA limit on settlement, profit or aggregate winningsDoes “payout” include the returned stake? Is the period one bet, round or day?

A cashier withdrawal limit controls transfers out of the account. It does not tell you how much the game accepts or pays. Read the withdrawal and dispute guide separately from the game rules.

Does the posted minimum apply to every craps bet?

Not always. A casino might require the full table minimum on Pass Line and Place wagers while accepting smaller units on center proposition bets or bonus components. Another property may require the minimum on every individual wager. Electronic games can enforce a minimum total action rather than a minimum per spot.

Correct payout increments also matter. A table may accept $10 on Place 6, but the standard 7-to-6 payout cannot be made exactly in whole dollars. Betting 6 and 8 in multiples of $6, 5 and 9 in multiples of $5, and 4 and 10 in multiples of $5 avoids rounded-down place payouts.

Check limits by bet class

Use this matrix with the exact game’s limits panel. A blank or missing rule means unknown, not unlimited. Record the currency and game version as well as the amounts.

Per-number exposure is different from total layout

First define “exposure.” Wager principal on the layout, the amount you could lose on a particular roll, and the casino’s potential payout liability are different quantities. Opposing bets and off bets can make those totals differ; a limit can use any explicitly stated basis.

Hypothetical example: the point is 6, with $100 on Pass Line, $200 in attached Odds and $120 on Place 6. The combined principal associated with 6 is $420. If all three wagers work, a seven-out loses that $420. A rule that combines those positions under a $400 per-number principal cap would reject the combination even if each wager fits its own limit. Another game may group them differently.

Total-layout principal also includes your other covered positions. Do not multiply one advertised maximum by every box on the layout: overlapping caps may prevent that combination. The Craps Bet Builder & Exposure Map can model supported wagers and their next-roll exposure; it does not enforce an operator’s limits. For Across sizing, see high-limit Across exposure.

Proposition-bet maximums

Read whether a payout ceiling means profit alone or the complete return including your stake. A proposition maximum may be limited by the permitted wager or by the maximum win. Suppose a table permits a maximum $3,000 profit on a straight-up 12 paying 30 to 1. Dividing $3,000 by 30 gives a $100 maximum wager. That does not prove every 30-to-1 wager at the table is capped at $100; it shows how a maximum-win rule would be converted.

Center and bonus wagers can have their own posted caps. Ask before placing a large Horn, hop, hardway, Fire, or All-Tall-Small wager instead of extrapolating from the Pass Line maximum.

Taking Odds: single, double, and fixed multiples

For Pass and Come, a simple fixed Odds factor is usually expressed as a multiple of the flat bet.

Taking Odds: single, double, and fixed multiples: Flat bet; Odds rule; Nominal maximum taking Odds.
Flat betOdds ruleNominal maximum taking Odds
$10Single$10
$10Double$20
$105x$50
$1010x$100
$1020x$200
$10100x$1,000

The nominal formula is:

maximum taking Odds = flat bet × allowed factor

A casino may allow the amount to move to a nearby payable increment. That “push” is house procedure, not a right. Ask how the table handles an amount that would produce a fractional payout.

How 3-4-5x Odds works

How 3-4-5x Odds works: Point; Maximum on a $10 flat bet; True-odds payout; Maximum profit.
PointMaximum on a $10 flat betTrue-odds payoutMaximum profit
4 or 103x = $302 to 1$60
5 or 94x = $403 to 2$60
6 or 85x = $506 to 5$60

The changing multiplier creates the same maximum Odds profit for every point. The flat $10 Pass or Come wager would pay an additional $10 if it wins.

Laying Odds on Don’t Pass and Don’t Come

Don’t-side Odds reverse the payment: you risk more to win less. Some houses express the limit as the amount you may lay; others allow a lay amount calculated to win the stated multiple of the flat bet.

Laying Odds on Don't Pass and Don't Come: Point; Lay amount to win $10; Calculation.
PointLay amount to win $10Calculation
4 or 10$20Risk 2 to win 1
5 or 9$15Risk 3 to win 2
6 or 8$12Risk 6 to win 5

Original CrapsPit example: with a $5 Don’t Pass bet, point 6, and a rule allowing Odds that can win twice the flat bet, the maximum desired Odds win is $10. You would lay $12 to win $10. Confirm the house’s interpretation before placing the chips.

Correct increments and rounding

Correct increments and rounding: Taking Odds on point; Use multiples of; Reason.
Taking Odds on pointUse multiples ofReason
4 or 10$1 where permitted2-to-1 payout is whole on any whole-dollar bet
5 or 9$23-to-2 payout
6 or 8$56-to-5 payout

Chip denomination and maximum rules can produce exceptions. For example, a house might allow $6 rather than $5 single Odds on point 5 so the 3-to-2 payoff is exact. Another may cap the wager at the literal multiplier. The useful habit is to state the intended amount and ask, “Is that the maximum payable Odds?”

Do Odds count toward another cap?

The advertised Odds multiple is only one condition. Ask whether the resulting wager must also fit a cash maximum, a combined per-number cap or the remaining total-layout allowance. Permission to exceed the flat-bet maximum with Odds does not by itself establish an exemption from all other limits.

Hypothetical example: a $100 Pass bet at point 6 with 5x taking Odds allows a nominal $500 Odds stake. Suppose the same game has a $1,000 total-layout principal cap that includes Odds, and the flat bet plus other wagers already use $750. Only $250 of layout allowance remains. Under those stated assumptions, and absent a lower separate cap, the maximum added Odds is $250, not $500. If Odds are expressly excluded from that total cap, the calculation changes.

Use the Free Odds guide for taking and laying payouts. The game must establish which Odds attachments exist; a familiar craps layout is not evidence that every attachment is offered.

Can limits change while you are playing?

Casinos can open, close, or re-limit tables as demand and staffing change. Whether existing players are temporarily grandfathered at the old minimum is a house decision. Never assume it. Ask whether the new minimum applies immediately, on the next shooter, or only to new players.

A limit is not a bankroll recommendation

Maximum Odds lowers the house edge as a percentage of combined action, but it increases the dollars exposed and the swing when 7 wins the race. A 100x table gives you permission, not a reason, to risk 100 times the flat bet. Set a session budget first and choose a flat bet that leaves room for the Odds level you actually intend to use.

Check exact bet returns in the craps payout table and review physical chip placement in the Pass Line guide.

From Sam: The placard gives you the headline; the crew gives you that table’s working interpretation. Across more than 65 casino visits, I have learned not to carry an Odds or rounding assumption from one property to another.
