Big 6 and Big 8 are self-service standing bets that win even money when 6 or 8 arrives before 7. The same $6 placed through the dealer pays $7 instead of $6, reducing the edge from 9.09% to 1.52%.

Big 6/8 offers convenience, not value. If both bets are available at the same amount and rules, ask the dealer to Place 6 or 8 and collect the higher payout.
Rules and layout
Big 6 and Big 8 boxes, where offered, sit near a curved portion of the Pass Line. Place the chip yourself in the appropriate box before the dice move. The wager remains until the selected number wins, 7 loses, or you remove/call it off under house procedure.
Not every modern layout prints these boxes. Absence is a layout choice; players can still ask for a standard Place 6 or Place 8.

For Big 6, five winning decisions earn $30 and six losing decisions cost $36: a $6 expected deficit across $66 wagered, or 9.09%. Place 6 changes only the payoff. Five wins earn $35 against the same $36 losses, leaving a $1 deficit across $66.
Collecting and repeating
After a win, the dealer commonly places the even-money payoff beside the self-service wager. Pick up the profit if you want only the original amount to repeat. Collect everything to end the bet. Chips left together may be treated as a larger next wager.
Complete $6 example
- You place $6 in Big 8.
- Rolls of 5 and 10 do nothing.
- 8 rolls, so the dealer pays $6 beside the original.
- You collect the profit and leave $6 for another decision.
- A later 7 collects the remaining wager.
If this were Place 8, the first win would pay $7 and the later 7 would still lose $6. The decision is identical; only payoff changes.
Come-out working status
Do not infer that an OFF puck automatically protects Big 6/8. Working status follows the layout and house procedure. Ask, especially because come-out 7 wins Pass Line but loses a working Big 6/8.
Questions players ask
- Same as Place? Same number-versus-7 decision, different standard payout and location.
- Removable? Normally a flexible standing wager between rolls.
- Why offered? Availability is not a value recommendation.
- Table minimum? Often applies, but check the exact rule.
When could Big 6/8 differ?
A special layout could publish a different payoff or promotion. Compare the printed terms rather than the label. At standard even money, Place is unambiguously better for the same principal.
